Peace Love and Harmony asked:

Please explain the moral basis of the Bush/GOP foreign policy.

(HINT: It seems to have something to do with OIL and PROFITS.)

BTW, I’m for democracy, and the hypocrisy of the right wing is UNBELIEVABLE.

Comments:

  1. Never. The Bush/ GOP foreign policy is morally bankrupt

  2. The simple difference is that the Saudis have oil and are right-wing. The cubans don’t have oil and are left-wing.

  3. hey the Saudis have cool swords though! you cant forget that~~

and Castro just has a bag full of insults to the USA. it doesnt really matter that the Saudis are chopping off heads if they are nice to you when you get there…. i guess….

  4. Yes, Castro’s murdered way more people than any King of Saudi Arabia ever did on his worst day.

  5. NAhh Castro was more a fan of slow slow torture for dissidents.

Sadly he was less brutal than Batista though.

  6. Gee, its only the Bush Presidency and yet we have had good political relationship with Saudi since the end of WWII. I didn’t realize Bush had been president since 1945. We have no idea what Fidel has done but I can guarantee that there were some very bad things done by him.

  7. Here’s a HINT for you:

Bush has really continued the same foreign policies towards Saudi Arabia and Cuba that have been in place since the 1960s. He hasn’t changed them.

Castro has done far worse things to his people then Saudi Arabia has.

  8. “Vilified” leader Castro? Do you think Bush vilified him? Or did he vilify himself? Go find a escaped, defected Cuban somewhere on the streets of Miami and ask him why he’d rather live on the streets in Miami than in a mansion in Cuba.

  9. No, castro starved his people to death, and shot those that openly disagreed with him. U.S. Foriegn policy is not the sole property of Bush or the GOP. If it has anything to do with oil, please tell me why we havent recieved a drop? Care to explain why the oil isnt coming here? Care to explain why you bash Bush for owning stock in the same company as michael moore and the clintons?

  10. Firing squad vs. chopping heads - what’s the difference; either way the dissident is dead.

Hypocrisy goes both ways and Democrats have also been friendly with monarchs and right wing dictators, but I agree we have been too cosy with governments we would not want to live under. For example, we should have told the royal family in Kuwait that they would have to establish a democratic parlimentary system like in England if they wanted us to rescue them from Saddam and still have a degree of monarchy.

  11. I don’t think they chopped off heads but they sure did a lot of executing of the opposition in Cuba. The United States foreign policy regarding Cuba has been in place since the Kennedy administration. I am not aware of any Saudi Kings chopping off heads, please cite your source.

Is “oil and profits” some kind of buzz word? You use oil and oil related products all the time. What is wrong with oil? In America we have the highest living standard. That is due to Capitalism which is driven by profits. Do you find profits to be bad? Do you work for free or at a loss?

I am glad you are for democracy. But what good is democracy if the people have empty stomachs? Democracy with Capitalism is what makes for a good life. Democracy without liberty is useless, too. People need all three, the right to self-determination, freedom and enough wealth to be able to take care of themselves without dependence on the Government.

I know foreign policy is not the Democrats strong suit but here is a simplified version for you to ponder. America has never been attacked nor had to wage war with a democracy. In fact, democracies do not war on other democracies. Countries that are free, have capitalist economies and democracy are far more likely to be trade competitors than enemies.

So, the way to fix the problems of hunger, tyranny, ethnic cleansing, terrorism and war is by promoting democracy and capitalism. In other words, truth, justice and the American Way. It works every time it is tried.

  12. No, but he did imprison, torture and murder political opponents when he took power, with Che being his personal executioner. No trials, no judges, no jury, just imprisonment and execution.

And the Cubans are still imprisoning dissenters to this day.

In Saudi Arabia, those being punished are guilty of crimes, as decided by a judge after a trial.

See the difference? Understand the difference? Is it too nuanced for the fringe left?

  13. Castro prefered firing squads.
    Ask the Cuban refugees.

  14. Oil wasn’t invented with the advent of Bush, it’s been around for centuries…there is nothing new there…but Castro killed thousands of people, it doesn’t matter how, just that he did.

  15. US foreign policy = kowtowing to the Saudis
